Do you need a bear canister while day hiking?

Post by HollyGIrl »

My husband and I will be doing day hikes this September in Yosemite, mostly Tuolumne Meadows area. The guide books make it sound as if you always have to store food in canisters. Is it necessary when you are out for a day hike and just carrying lunch/snacks? Thanks.

You don't need a bear canister to day hike. There are bear lockers near many trailheads, where you should leave any food/items with an odor that you won't be taking on your hike while you are away from your vehicle though.

Also, although you don't need a bear canister, it would be good practice to keep the day pack with your food within arm's length of at least a member of your party at al times.
