Car camping suggestions east of Fresno

Post by ritter »

Hey all,

I’m looking for some (gasp) car camping suggestions within relatively easy access from Fresno/Clovis the end of the month. We’ve got a child-free Thursday-Sunday and are looking for a nice base camp for some day hiking, stream fishing and possibly canoeing. I’d like to get into terrain similar to, but not necessarily on, Kaiser Pass Road between Huntington Lake and Edison Lake. The ideal campsite would be sparsely populated. Thanks for any suggestions!

Lots of people head out on the dirt roads between 168 and Dinkey Creek and just camp in pullouts.

There are nicer places out at Courtright and Wishon. But the area will be busy with fisherman and campers now that the snow's all gone...

If you like hot springs check out the Mono Hot Springs Resort, they have a car campground, and you will be able to soak free in the concrete tubs across the creek from the campground, plus there's some good dayhikes up to Tule Lake and Doris Lake off the dirt road - in fact, you can camp free on that side road, heading up to the trailhead. Saw some folks pitching tents back there.
