Philosopher George Sessions to discuss John Muir and David B

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Philosopher George Sessions to discuss John Muir and David Brower

By: Sierra College
Published: Mar 18, 2006 at 09:12

Renowned philosopher and writer, Sierra College Emeritus Professor George Sessions will review Deep Ecology and the contributions of conservationists John Muir and David Brower to the Sierra Nevada on the Sierra College - Rocklin campus on Thursday, March 23, 2006, at 6 PM.

The lecture will be presented as part of the course Interdisciplinary 6: The Sierra Nevada. Interdisciplinary 6 is a semester-length class examining the art, history, natural history, and public policy of the Sierra Nevada region.

Sessions is an outspoken advocate of Deep Ecology, a philosophical/social activist movement which espouses "a deep love and appreciation for the wild Earth and all its inhabitants, and a fierce commitment to protect it."

Sessions will review how the Sierra Nevada provided a source of information and experience, as well as powerful inspiration, for the famed naturalist John Muir and well-known environmentalist David Brower. John Muir, a college-trained geologist/botanist, became a naturalist and advocate for forests, wilderness, and national parks in the 19th century and early 20th century. Muir became the first president of the Sierra Club, a position much later occupied by David Brower. Brower, a tireless champion for the preservation of natural areas and public lands, waged battles against developers from California to Florida. Until his death in 2000, Brower lectured regularly at Sierra College.

The lecture will be in the campus Library/Learning Resource Center in Room LRC 107 at 6 PM. The public is invited to this free lecture, although campus parking permits are required. Parking permits can be purchased for $1 at campus dispensers.
