Well we have our permits for July 3rd and I'm watching the Whitney Board,
what the best guess here for conditions, will there be a clear trail to the top?
The big question now is: we would like to camp overnight prior to hitting the trail
what's the best option and trail head parking, are there lots of spots?
Whitney, night before etc. ?

You can camp at Whitney Portal Campground the night before you start your hike. Plenty of parking at the Portal as well.

We are hoping to but is that a reserve campground or first-come-first served,
ie show up early type and how early
I would like to use that smiley without the soapbox, Ha-Ha.

How many people in "we"? Two can usually find something, a larger group on the holiday weekend may be a problem. The regular campground may be full - walk-in at the Portal may be a better bet. But if you can get a regular campsite - I think it is better to be next to your car when you are packing etc. I would think that you may want to get there no later than noon on Friday July 2. The regular campground takes reservations - you should check first to see that all spaces are not already taken. There is another campground way down the road before the switchbacks - I think it is a BLM campground.
