Snow surveys

Post by John Dittli »

We just returned from snow surveys for the upper Kern (Kings/Kern Divide to Cottonwood Pass). The snow pack sits between ~110% (Tyndall) to ~120% (Rock Creek). Barring a warm dry spring, we should have a nice summer snow pack this year.

John, this is great information -- thanks for posting it. And your photos are fabulous!

Do you have access to historical information that we hikers can use to compare this year's snow pack on May 1 with other years? For instance, I remember 1978 as having a sizable snow pack, which made getting over the high passes an adventure until early August. It was hard trudging through deep snow cups but really beautiful -- and there were far fewer people on the trail.

Takes a little time to figure out where to look, but all the historical data - and real-time current data from remote sensors - is there.

What Paul said; I've never found a good, straight forward link for historical data. But it is available at the above link, you just have to dig for it.
