Trailhead Info

Post by amrowinc »

I'm getting ready to apply for a permit for a trip starting at Red's Meadow and heading south on the JMT to exit at Bishop Pass. Looking at the Inyo NF trailhead info has resulted in much confusion for any already confused old guy! The list of trailheads quotas at
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation ... otas.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
shows letter/number codes with names i.e. A15 JMT/PCT South. What I am looking for is information identifying the trailhead locations. There is a site
http://www.sierranevadawild.gov/map/Directory.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
has some imformation but does not match up the codes with the names. I can always call for the info but does anyone know if there is a list to break the code? Help!

Go here:

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation ... vail.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Trails are listed here from north to south. If you pull out a map of the area, it is easy to identify each trailhead. You are probably looking for the Devil's Postpile South trailhead (A15 on this chart).

Thanks Mike for the response. Maybe I am being anal about this. I am familiar with the site you directed me to which lists the trailheads and dates with filled quotas. I have numerous maps of the area but it is not clear (at least to me) the correlation between the names of the trailheads and their location. In the Reds Meadow area there are numerous trails which essentially start at same place yet there are a number of permit possibilities. So I am trying to figure out what the difference would be between a permit for A14-Fish Creek and A15-JMT-PCT South since they both seem to start at Reds.

Don't sweat it. You can probably find a map somewhere on that site that will tell you exactly where these trailheads are in and around Reds Meadows. My guess is that they start out at the same place and then branch down the trail, one fork going south on the JMT and the other heading to Fish Creek, to use the example you gave.

You want to go south on the JMT, so secure your permit for that route and when you pick up your permit in person, the rangers will tell you where exactly to find the trailhead. It has been ages since I have been to Reds Meadows . . . overuse was one of the issues with the area when I was there. There are a myriad of trails in the area; many will get you to the JMT. The quickest route is most likely well marked, so don't worry. Have a great time and be sure to visit Rainbow Falls!

If you are at the store in Reds Meadow, head straight through the pack station and you will easily find the trail (if you have any question ask at the store).

And while you're at it, you can head to Fish Creek and Iva Bell Hot Springs (which are nice when they aren't crowded - you may have to share) if you have the time.
