Humphery's Basin skate

Post by John Dittli »

Trail to Piute is pretty much snow free within a 1/2 mile of the pass. Humphery's Basin is about 50% snow and 95% of that is supportable. Found nice ice on Desolation Lake, Muriel Lake, Piute and Lock Leven. Hope to post video tomorrow.

What an absolutely AWESOME story (both here and in the mag article)!! Really delightful. Thanks for that, I'll be thinking about it all weekend. \:D/

This is so stinkin' cool. Definitely something I want to try... I grew up in Canada and Ice hockey is a lifelong passion, but skating on a lake at 11,000 feet... that could possibly even top the back-yard ice rink neighborhood games.

The beauty of the lakes looking straight down through crystal clear ice must be amazing.

At times the ice is so clear you can see fish swimming. I finally got the video loaded. I put a bit too much black at the beginning so please stick with it.

Wonderful article. Love the photos. And now the video. Somehow, I don’t think my few times around the Curry Village rink with my son when he was little allow me to consider skating the lakes. But just going up there in November and walking/sliding on the Humphreys Basin lakes is something I want to do at least once. Thanks for awakening something I hadn’t thought of as being something realistically possible.
I don’t need a goal destination. I need a destination that meets my goals.

Wow! What an amazing thing to do! I love the opening sequence (well, after the dark), where you just see the ice racing by and then the camera looks up to Mt. Humphreys: awesome!
