Mount Baldy

Post by ridgeline »

Hiked Mt Baldy Sat the 3rd by way of the bowl, day started out clear and cold and ended with low visibility and in the 20's. After summiting I met Kevin R , so we hiked down together. Saw one guy in sneakers and in a bit of trouble on a steep slope, A concerned hiker was helping him move slowly down. SAR was at Manker asking about a overdue hiker, Looks like this mountain is still too close to town.

Looks like you had a nice hike. We missed you on Saturday!

Nice photos, I'd like to get up there one of these weekends. Did you use crampons or snowshoes or were boots enough?

From the base of the bowl up the crampons went on and stayed on for the descent to about a thousand feet below the ski hut. The snow was very dry, with the cold temps a surface crust would form, I would be cruising along at a good pace and all of a sudden posthole with one leg through the crust throwing my body forward. The temps are supposed to raise this week, hopefully the next dumping of snow will be a bit wetter.
