Loop around the GWD trip ideas

Post by trav867 »

There have been a few posts lately about Great Western Divide trips, and they got me thinking about a high country trip from Onion Valley or Roads End down the west side of the GWD to Mineral King and back up the east side, either dropping down to the Kern or staying high. Has anyone here done a trip like that?

Hi Trav

I have done numerous trips that have dissected the GWD, but have not done one
trip to do the whole thing, though 3 years ago I did put a route together from
Mineral King to Roads End (mostly x-country) naming it the GWD Trail.
Mineral King-Glacier Pass-Cyclamen Pass-Big Arroyo-Kaweah Pass-Picket Pass
Pants Pass-Lion Rock Pass-Lion Lake Pass-Table Creek-Talus Pass-Midway Col
Milly's Foot-Longley Pass-Cinder Col-Sphinx Col-Avalanche Pass Trail-Bubbs Creek
Roads End.
You could take Harrison Pass-Deerhorn Saddle-University Pass-Robinson Lake-Onion
Valleyinstead of the Milly's Foot Pass route to Roads End.
You could also go west towards Elizabeth Pass instead of going into Cloud Canyon
go over Glacier Ridge towards Elizabeth Pass towards Lonely Lake, go over the pass
and head up towards Pterodactyl Pass-Follow Ferguson Creek to Sugar Loaf Trail-
Roaring River-Avalanche Pass Trail to Roads End.
The first variation is the best IMO but either would be quit an adventure

I ran across this hike while researching my GWD trip last year. It sounded like fun.

That's pretty much the same route except Bill went into 9 Lakes Basin
instead of Kaweah Basin.
I have been to his site many times but I seemed to have missed this trip, good
reading, thanks jkemper.
