Coldest Night?

Post by maverick »

I'd be interested to know what's the coldest night you've ever spent in the Sierra
degrees, place, and month?
Mine would be -5F, Emerald Lakes, Middle Fork Bishop Creek, Nov 96.

(Interesting new look for HST!)

My coldest night? A no-brainer. I wrote about it here:

Coldest Backpacking Trip:

- November (2000?)
- 12 degrees on the thermometer (but pretty windy, too)
- Lake Italy

About 4 years ago in January, Perazzo Meadow, north of Truckee, minus 7 according to the zip-o-gauge. According to my nose hairs and mustache, it was pretty close to that if the thermometer was off.
Piece of cake.

7 deg, Muriel Lake - Mesa Lake, Sept 19, 2004. Day 9 of a 16 day trip. Weather was clear the first 8 days, then clouds came in. We spent day 9 in the tent just after getting resupplied by friends. It snowed all day and temps dropped, no gloves, boots were frozen. We weren't prepared for snow, so started to bail on day 10. Someone coming in said it was supposed to get warmer so we continued but set up camp when it started storming again. The down in my sleeping bag shifted to the side, and I couldn't get warm. Finally figured it out at night when I covered my head and could see light thru the bag. We bailed on day 11.

Snowy I was expecting to see some of the lowest numbers posted by you
since your going up consistently even during the winter months.

Twice, a couple years apart in the 1980's near Paiute Pass temps were in the -10 F range. Then on my wife's first and only winter backpack trip around New Year's 1990 at South Lake. Temp was -5 at 6:00 PM and only got colder.

Wow, you guys have all been in really cold temps. I think my coldest night was about 12F in Mineral King a few years back. Strangely enough it was at at Cold Springs campsite at only 7,800ft on labor day. I've camped over 12,000ft several times but it never got that cold. I kept waking up in what felt like every 15 minutes. It was a horrible night's sleep and could't do anything the day after!
