2007 Sierra bear requirements map

Post by SSSdave »

FYI,

Download the below pdf link for an excellent Sierra map showing all the current bear requirements including where cannisters are mandatory, food locker locations, cannister rental locations, and the official names of many trail segments that don't otherwise have names on topo maps. It cleared up some misconceptions I've had about where cannisters are actually required. Not nearly as much area as just reading the policy list would tend to indicate.

Yes, it's a great map, or at least was when issued in March 2007. It's already outdated, though, as Yosemite now requires bear cans in all of its wilderness, not just those in purple on the map.

Not all Bear Lockers Listed

This is not a complete map. Lake Eleanor in NW Yosemite has bear lockers at two locations along the lake. One at the backpackers campground and the other along a cool beach between the outlet and Frog Cr. Great spot to canoe into and camp.
