Jurassic Peak, Round Mountain and Scodie Peak

Post by Snow Nymph »

Haiwee Ridge (aka Jurassic Peak)

Plan was to hike a Southern Sierra Peak, but rain and wind changed our plans. Rachel met me at Cactus Flats Road, and we did a quick warm up hike to Jurassic Peak. It was in the low 40s with strong winds, and we were chilled

Oh man.... does that look cold!!!

Looks like another great trip. A little creepy, though, with the register and bones, but LOVE the hats ;)!

Those hats were fun! I didn't want to spend $45 on it, though. Friday temp was nothing compared to Saturday! I was prepared with a good layering system, and only my fingers and toes got cold. Need those gloves with the mitten conversion for days like that!

Sage Flat (5,800') to Round Mountain (9,884')

On the way to Sage Flat, I followed a bear running up the road to where we camped. Couldn't get the camera out of my pocket! The bear scared a big wingspan bird (?) and then a kit fox when it dove in the bushes. Moose Tracks camped out with me, and in the morning Rachel and Tomcat showed up for a dayclimb in some VERY cold weather! We started hiking (25 deg) up the cowtrail to Olancha Pass, then took the PCT to a gully and headed for Round Mtn. Temp at the summit was 14 deg, and -20 with windchill (MINUS 20!) So cold and windy we didn't get a summit photo (couldn't get the cameras set up). We came down the main trail. It was a great hike!
