Question about SIERRA WIND MEASURMENTS

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Question about SIERRA WIND MEASURMENTS

Post by ERIC »

Hey Matt:

A friend just emailed me asking for some help finding information on historical Sierra wind measurements. Hoping you, or someone else on here can help? Here's his question:
Eric....I need your help. I am not very adept at
surfing the internet. Could you point me to a site
where I might ascertain the highest wind speed that
have ever been recorded in the Sierra?
I found one site that had a very scientific bent
regarding wind direction over the Sierra crest, but
nothing in the way of wind speed.
The folks at Mammoth Mt. tell me that they have
recorder wind speeds up to 140 mph. That's flying
speed, well, almost.
I am trying to write a book-of-days piece on the snow
banners that blow off the higher peaks...

Eric:

Desert Research Institute (DRI) has been doing wind calculations here in the Eastern Sierra for about 5 years; so, I bet they would have some long term figures on wind speed for the area. They are located in Reno and Las Vegas.
