Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Opioids, gun violence, and diabetes. All three the result of large corporations selling massive amounts of their products.

Could it also have something to do with the constant barrage of negative news that is creating a sense of hopelessness?

Walk into any Walmart and it will be evident why people are not healthy nowadays. OMG- obesity. OMG- look what is in their carts. OMG- why are they all here and not out on a beautiful day walking.

Are you around kids nowadays? Screen addiction. Toxic social media for teens. I live walking distance from the beautiful American River parkway- seldom see anyone, let alone kids down there playing. Just read that it is illegal for kids to walk to school under 10 years old in California, if they have to cross ONE street that does not have a crossing guard of traffic light.

Activities for kids? They used to be free, provided by schools. Now parents have to pay to get their kid in sports.

Look at "parenting" advise. Yes, I am old fashioned, but I feel we now have gone too much the other way- we never let our kids learn to deal with adversity- they enter the adult world as fragile dependent beings. Do not even know how to take care of themselves.

And poverty. Get out of your middle class environments and to walk in a poor neighborhood. Scary! Gangs, drugs.

This has all been building up for decades. Not just the toxic divisiveness of the last few years.

If you disagree with Daisy I hope you at least have some education to back up your opinions. I have a degree in economics so I know something.
Daisy is sooo correct.
Had I been born in 1942 or 1944 I would have been drafted and maybe killed in the hell our politicians created - Viet Nam. President Kennedy made a decision that saved my a _ _.
In California the best year to retire as a teacher was when I did at 60. I did almost all my high sierra fishing before they started murdering my fish. I had great fishing in lots of lakes that no longer have good fishing.
We make our decisions based on ideology or education. Education is not stupid, by definition. Ideology is quiet often stupid stupid stupid.

Ideology is a set of ideas and ideals that coalesce into a general theory of what ought to be. It draws from educational, social and religious roots. It's not an either or narrative. I do agree with WD and you can go back at least to the 70's to see the regression.
If you don't know where you're going, then any path will get you there.
