Cedar Grove campgrounds

Post by mkbgdns »

for the last 5 years, I've camped in Sentinel Campground the week after the road opened. two loops were open for self registration. the road opened on a Friday, and I went up the following Monday (when first weekenders left). this included 2017, a big snow year equal to this one.

this year the road opened yesterday, but the SEKI website states that campgrounds will not be open until May 22, four weeks from now. strangely, it also says that the lodge and market (private concessionaire) will open on May 10. in recent years, crews were working on preparing these facilities while I was camped in Sentinel. something doesn't add up.

called visitor center in Grant Grove, got the same message about campgrounds. sometimes those answering the phones aren't aware of fine details, or so I hope. will call SEKI headquarters on Monday. can anyone confirm or deny? is this the new, lean, mean, budget-constricted Park Service in action? don't want to waste a 5-hour drive to Cedar Grove.

Those dates are right but might be adjusted, the campgrounds are closed until they finish removing dead trees. A few lawsuits over fallen tree injuries on public lands the last several years got everyone spooked.
