Rae Lakes Loop Paradise Valley Bridge

Post by maverick »

SEKI NP:
The South Fork Kings River Bridge above Paradise Valley washed out during the winter of 2016-2017. Construction of a replacement bridge will not begin before 2020. Depending on conditions, crossing the South Fork of the Kings River can be extremely hazardous. Observe conditions carefully and then evaluate the risk of crossing. Be prepared to turn back. If you hike the Rae Lakes Loop beginning from Bubbs Creek, plan for the possibility that you may have to backtrack to safely reach Cedar Grove.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

You know, it would not be a stupid idea if the park service would string up a rope or chain or cable there as an overhead aid to those crossing the river, at least on a temporary basis.

Let's hold a bake sale so we can build this. Even better, let's do a fund me type thing. After all, we're too poor a country to rebuild a bridge in the park. :o

Just don't pay any attention to the billion dollar aircraft that whiz past the speed of sound over the Sierra daily.

We went in Memorial Day weekend 2003, and never used a bridge. I do not think there even was a bridge then. We crossed on a fallen log early in the morning and went up to Castle Dome Meadow. Coming back in the afternoon, the crossing a side creek from Pyramid Peak was short but crotch deep. The log was submerged in about 2 inches of water. We had crampons (cannot recall why we brought them) so we put them on to cross the log. Without the log I would not have wanted to cross. There were numerous logs at that crossing. I doubt that exact same log is there now but with some hunting I suspect you could find a suitable log.

The water levels varied significantly from morning to afternoon. If stuck, and it was afternoon, I would wait and try in the morning before turning back.

2002 was an average snowpack year on Memorial Day, although it was less than average on April 1. There was a late snow and slow melt that year. Here is a photo of the river. I think we found the log crossing downstream of this.

No, my post did not need fixing. You misquoted me, and I hate that. Do it correctly or don't do it at all. Clear?
