Big Whitney & Tunnel Meadows 6/8

Post by Dmasten »

Sounded like a couple of mosquitos at Horseshoe Meadows TH around 8:00 AM, but no bites. No other mosquitos until late afternoon just below Trail Pass, then just a few, but biting, so 2.

Little Yosemite Valley June 9th

Little Yosemite Valley - June 9th

2 Rating - the mosquitoes were present throughout the day, but they were not biting aggressively. A little deet and some nice breezes made it so it was not an issue.

Loch Leven Lakes + Snow Mountain 6/8–6/10

Post by mister_e »

6/8 — 1. Night hike a couple of miles up the Loch Leven trail; encountered no mosquitoes
6/9 — 2. While breaking camp we saw a few mosquitoes, and at least one attempted a bite through my left Vibram Fivefingers (unsuccessful). Did not see any once we reached the altitude of the lakes (6800 ft); nor when we descended off-trail into the Big Granite Creek valley and stopped by the creek for lunch (5900 ft); nor when we climbed Snow Mountain or camped on the ridge behind it (7500 ft).
6/10 — 1. Woke with frost on tarp and found the damp ground slightly frozen compared to the night before; descended fire road and returned to Lakes cross-country and then to trailhead without seeing any further mosquitoes.

2.

The meadows are drying out fast. But there are the usual pools here and there, to breed them.... Nights are still freezing, but anticipate the onslaught is about to hit.

2 on most of the trip, with breaks from them up in the Pingree / Leighton lakes area (~8K-8300). Never really got above 2, even in the flooded Groundhog Meadow area.

120 Corridor Thru Yosemite to Mono Lake 6/10-6/13

Post by SSSdave »

Three days along SR120 through Yosemite and down at Mono Lake. Mostly 1 or 2 however very location dependent. Wet marshy lush and stream areas could be 3 while sunny dry areas 1. 3 bit my back through a cotton t-shirt eating at a Tenaya Lake table. Same situation at Lembert Dome, a couple made passes at me. I will speculate that our 4 year drought seriously reduced populations of snow mosquitoes that have not yet recovered. That is possibly why we haven't seen bad mosquitoes since 2010 despite the last couple winters being wetter.
