Dicks Peak and Mount Rose

Post by KathyW »

Anita and I did a great hike out to Dick's Peak in the Tahoe area on Saturday. It was a wonderful day - great company and a beautiful day. Here are some pictures from the hike:

Then on Sunday I did the hike to Mount Rose on my way to Reno:

It was a beautiful weekend up in the northern Sierra - too bad I had to go stay in a smoky casino in Reno for a couple of days for a staff meeting after spending a wonderful weekend in the mountains.

After a few years of following Kathys trip reports and pictures..I finally meant and hiked with her. I have had the pleasure to meet from this board so far Snownymph, Trailtrekker, Mtflyer, Tomcat, Kerstin & now Kathy! As time goes on I do hope I can meet more of you! :D

This was an awesome hike..it's one of my all time favorite's in the Desolation area. I kinda have a story with Dicks Peak..the 1st time I tried it..we had to turn around just below the 1st summit because my friend's dog got her pads all chewed up from the sharp rocks..The 2nd time I tried..I went solo left way to late, I got past the 1st summit onto the ridge...turned back because it was getting late and I did not want to be caught hiking out in the dark, the 3rd time in 2005 I did get to the summit. This time my 4th time with Kathy.. I stopped to rest and eat just above the 1st lower summit had to re-energize my body  ...I waited and watched Kathy climb the rest of the way to the summit!

Had a great hike out chatting and enjoying the mountains.....I thought maybe we would see SSSDave someplace up in there as he was in the area..but we never saw him.
I did take a few pictures of our hike..but they seem to be really on the dark side..something odd going on with my camera :crybaby: ..here is the link to them if anyone is interested!
Kathy thanks for a great day...it was so nice to finally meet you

Looks like a fun day girls, I have not been in that area in some time and your picks make me feel homesick. How were the skeeters? I was eaten alive at Lk Gilmore once, didnt take a tent and had to get in the bag early afternoon even with deet on.

Pooch and I did Dick's Peak about 5-6 years ago after camping at Dick's Lake and going up to the pass first, then climbing along the ridge to the peak. A very nice guy whose buddies couldn't all make it that trip passed a tall one to us who were there. After taking in the view for over half and hour to an hour, Pooch and I bailed over the north side, heading staight to Dick's Lake. MiT, it can be hard going up the south side and the trail is rocky.
Piece of cake.

Anita - The hike out to Dicks Peak was great - a really enjoyable day. It was so nice to finally meet you too. Too bad we missed SSSDave.

Ridgeline - The bugs weren't out. I thought they might be, so I carried DEET, but I didn't need it.

I hope I can get back up to that area soon - it's just beautiful and there are lots of peaks to get to.

Thank you all for your nice comments! You all are so nice here! Kathy I forgot to mention...the Mount Rose pictures are beautiful..Im glad you got that one..it is very different...the waterfall is nice. Did you have winds? Last year when I did it I almost got blown off of that backside   ..I had never experienced that high of winds before in my life..Rose can be prone to very high winds.
Kerstin I know it would have been nice if you had been with us...Dicks Peak is always there.
