Which time do you prefer for backpacking?

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Have a safer backcountry experience by using the HST ReConn Form 2.0, named after Larry Conn, a HST member: http://reconn.org

A. Pacific Standard Time year round...

Only because I want to see all the tech companies have to roll a new patch to update all the clocks. :)

I'd prefer the nation just do away with DST. Bush did enough damage by just shifting the change by a couple weeks and put basic DST global changes (where applicable) out of synch by a couple weeks. Some of my meetings with Ireland shift not just twice but 4 times a year because all countries don't play the same DST dates.

And when backpacking, I don't look at the time; I wait for the Sun to tell me what to do.

The only time I refer to my watch when I am hiking is to determine how much progress we're making on any given trail. Doesn't matter to me in the least if we are waking up at 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. or 8 a.m....but we live on solar time on the trail.

It does not matter to me anymore because I am retired and my leaving town time is not dictated by a work schedule. I can see that people who have set work schedules may prefer a bit more daylight at the end of the day to get out of town before driving in the dark. Once it gets dark I get sleepy when driving. When I go to Wyoming I have to also adjust to Mountain daylight time. When you backpack in Arizona you do not have to switch when we are on daylight time. :D

The only thing I can see that may matter is if you are using your shadow to estimate time, you would have to do that on standard time.

I've been condemning daylight savings time for decades. It unnaturally unbalances for outdoor enthusiasts, the normal solar day with highest sun altitude at exactly midday. I tend to be very time aware naturally both day and night any time I wake up. Despite a list of lame benefits promoted by advocates, the actual hidden agenda for DST is the result of powerful commercial interests especially retail and entertainment, that think if there is more daylight after people leave their work places, they are more likely to spend their money.
