Lodges/family camps with a 3 yr old

Post by mya2009 »

I'm planning a trip with my young family to the Sierras in late Spring/Summer and was looking to find some good family camp / lodge options. I spent a lot of time camping, backpacking and day hiking around Yosemite in my 20's but now have a 1 year old and 3 year old who have grown up in the suburbs of Florida.

What other camps and lodges are there in the Sierras (close to Yosemite or not) similar to Camp Mather, Evergreen Lodge or Tuolumne Camp? Are there better options for a 3 year old?

Related: we recently took a trip to Murren, Switzerland where they had an amazing Children's Adventure Trail with kids activities (small zip lines, tree houses, playground etc) along a trail which would rival a lot of the best hikes in the Sierras. The hike started at a very cool outdoor / Swiss themed playground complete with restaurant which was accessible by a short train ride up the mountain. The hike was maybe 2-3 miles in total but amazing. A huge hit with the kids and adults. Links below...

Is there a similar experience anywhere in the U.S. that you're aware of?

Royal Gorge has some great Nordic skiing to some high end lodges in the backcountry. I think you may be able to hike the same trails after the snow melts. It is as nice as the high end lodges in Switzerland.

Edit: after looking over their web site, it appears they may no longer own the small backcountry cabins they used to have, though there is a lodge in snowbound Sugar Bowl.

My daughter swears by Tenaya Lodge (south end of park on Hwy 41??) It is pricy and cheesy but lots of organized activities for kids. She was there in the winter when kids were 2 and 4 and they loved it.

I would not discount Yosemite Valley. I have seen families in Camp 4, which is a first come campground. There are lots of ranger lead activities in the valley for kids.

Rock Creek Lodge?? Rock Creek hiking is very kid-friendly and easy.

Lots of little lodges up at Mammoth Lakes- George Lake recreation area.

Montecito-Sequoia Lodge was good when our kids were younger.

I've only been there in the winter (which was great fun, and there were lots of families with little kids) but it does seem like a great place to stay with kids.
