Owens Valley & High Sierra Forecast

Short Term…The first of two strong low pressure systems barreled through the Owens Valley and High Country yesterday. The Fort Independence EPA Met Station recorded wind gusts of 56.7 MPH. Snow flurries were seen in various locations in the High Country, including a few flakes at the Whitney Portal Store. I expect today will be another windy one as the second low dives through our area. High wind warnings will be in effect for the Owens Valley and the High Country from 9am to 9pm today. Fort Independence at 0825 already has gusts of 41 MPH. Winds should drop off dramatically sometime tonight after 12pm, giving us only mildly breezy conditions on Saturday. For today, the Owens Valley can expect winds in excess of 40 MPH and afternoon temps in the upper 70s. Evening temps will be quite cool today and tomorrow, with lows in the low 40s. The High Country (8,000 ft.) will see winds in excess of 50 mph today and very cool evening temps down to the upper 20s today and tomorrow. The Sierra Crest can expect wind gusts in the 90+ MPH range today.
Long Term…High pressure will build in on Sunday through Tuesday, giving us warmer temps and much less wind. Dry conditions will prevail with mostly clear skies through the first part of next week.
