Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Owens Valley & High Sierra Forecast
Fort Independence EPA Met Station
EPA Site No: 06-027-1028
0842 PDT 12 Sep 2006

All:

Short Term…High pressure continues aloft which will produce a dry and stable flow over the Owens Valley. As a result, fair skies and a slight warming trend will be the order of the day through tomorrow. The high will begin to break down Wednesday as an approaching upper trough nears the Pacific Northwest. The Owens Valley can expect daytime temps in the low to mid 90s and evening temps in the low to mid 50s. The High Country will see afternoon temps in the mid 70s and evening temps in the mid 30s.

Long Term…Fair skies and moderate temps will continue on Wednesday, but by Thursday the developing upper trough will drive farther southeast, pulling a strong area of low pressure through the Easter Sierra. This will bring on a significant cooling trend Thursday through the weekend. There will be an abundance of cold air and locally high winds with this system. This will be the coldest airmass to invade the Eastern Sierra and Owens Valley since late May. The High Country (8,000 feet) will see daytime temps drop to the low to mid 50s and evening temps down to the upper 20s by Saturday. The upper elevations (+10,000 feet) may see evening temps plummet to the mid to upper teens. Gusty winds over the Sierra Crest to + 60 MPH can be expected on Friday into Saturday. Upper elevation backpackers take note; possible winter conditions Friday into Saturday, with a chance of snow and high winds over the Sierra Crest and through the passes. The Owens Valley will see daytime temps drop to the upper 70s by Friday/Saturday and evening temps down to the upper 40s.
