I still haven't see a lot of new "classics" posted. Are there any?

My wife and I were having a similar discussion yesterday. If we go back 30 or more years, many of the "top forty" are considered classics and get played frequently on the radio. Now, if we take today's "top 40", how many do you think will be played frequently 30 or more years from now? I doubt many will persist.

Man, I just realized, I was at this concert. Or at least, this tour. At the Coliseum in L.A. with about 75,000 other fans. I was about 25 ft. from the stage. I think my hearing still suffers.

Music isn't as monolithic as it once was and the old, tired and true methods of being exposed to new music aren't as relevant as they used to be. There's plenty of phenomenal new music out there, but it's all moot if you don't get exposed to it.

You make a good point. Years ago, there was one source; The radio, whether A/M of the 60s or F/M of the 70s. These labels tend to denote generational style and progression of modern music. The 50s became oldies, the 60s, I think got clumped in with 70s rock, but I think it deserves a pioneering status of its own. It was counter-culture at the time and there was a lot going on in those tumultuous times. Parents of the 60s grew up during the big bands and Hollywood crooners and that long haired hippy music was not accepted. The 70s is where rock and roll became mainstream. And, I think, by the end of the 70s, the new generation was a little tired of the same old same old. The 80s was a time of new exploration in modern music. Strange new avenues for expression opened up (my perspective).

I lost touch of rock and roll in the mid 80s. I could not identify with punk and some new wave artists were o.k., but .... I saw Oingo Boingo at the Roxy theater in Hollyweird and fell asleep. I also picked up a guitar at that time and started learning music theory. It turned me toward soft jazz and new age type stuff because I could appreciate different aspects of music from a theoretical standpoint. I was also attracted to music that could be played on a guitar as a solo instrument. A 6 string orchestra.

Then, I had kids....'nough said except that I got really tired of hearing winnie the poo and stuff at bed time. It's only recently that I've been re-discovering the music of my youth. I'm not sure where I'm going with this now but music has certainly become more eclectic and it's means of distribution as well. Maybe there will be no more labels on the evolutionary history of modern music, but there is certainly some very good stuff currently being produced. Satisfied has some very familiar structure.
