Voters reject proposal on Hetch Hetchy reservoir

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Voters reject proposal on Hetch Hetchy reservoir

Post by rlown »

SAN FRANCISCO -- A proposal that could have led to the dismantling of San Francisco's water system in Yosemite National Park's Hetch Hetchy Valley was roundly rejected by the city's voters today.

With all precincts reporting, unofficial election results showed that 77 percent of San Francisco voters voted no on Proposition F, a measure put on the ballot by a group seeking to restore the valley to its natural state.

The measure would have forced the city to formulate a plan to dismantle the dam, constructed in 1923, and improve local water conservation efforts. The plan would have gone before San Francisco voters as a charter amendment in November 2016.

I have a friend who is on the Restore committee and have been to one of their events. Early on, I told them they need to reach out to the Chinese community in SF if they want this to go. Well, they didn't, then the Mayor called the proposal "crazy" and the opposition was advertising on Chinese TV. Shows what ignoring a major voting block will get you.
