Sticks and markers on trails in the backcountry

The recent thread on ducks has emboldened me to test this out...
A friend of mine thinks I'm suffering from stick paranoid psychosis, but I thought I'd ask this anyway. Particularly in the Santa Monica mountains, and on stretches of PCT in So Cal, I've noticed for some time that people intentionally leave sticks (and in the case of the SM Mountains, sometimes little pieces of trash) at regular intervals in the middle of trails. They often are crossed in a perfect X, or other designs, that couldn't be accidental. Sometimes when the markers are light, there are stones placed on top of them presumably to keep them in place. Now, I've started to notice this a little on some trails in the Sierra. Can anyone humor me and tell me I'm not crazy?
