John Muir Laws gives presentation on Sierra Nevada

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Published: May 1, 2006 at 08:33

Acclaimed artist and naturalist John Muir Laws will discuss the natural history of the Sierra Nevada on Thursday, May 11, 2006 at 6 PM as part of the college's Sierra Nevada lecture series.

The lecture will be presented as part of the course, Interdisciplinary 6: the Sierra Nevada.

The semester-length class examines the art, history, natural history, management, and public policy of the Sierra Nevada region.

John Muir Laws, naturalist, educator, and artist will lecture on The Sierra Project, his forthcoming lavishly illustrated natural history guide for the Sierra Nevada. Laws, who is currently an Associate in the Research Division of the California Academy of Sciences, is creating an illustrated field guide to more than 1,200 species of plants and animals of the Sierra. It will include birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, trees, shrubs, wildflowers, fungi, and insects. This enormous project is currently under way and is cosponsored by the Heyday Institute, The California Academy of Sciences, various universities, and foundations.

John "Jack" Muir Laws has been an environmental educator for more than 25 years in California, Wyoming and Alaska. He has written and illustrated numerous field guides, most recently Sierra Birds: a Hiker's Guide. He lectures and teaches throughout the west and spends countless hours researching, sketching, and painting species for inclusion in his upcoming Sierra Nevada field guide. Samples of his art and projects can be found at http://www.johnmuirlaws.com

Laws will make this presentation as the culminating lecture for Interdisciplinary 6, a semester-long interdisciplinary course at Sierra College that focuses on the natural history of the Sierra, but includes art, history, economics, philosophy, management, and protection of this California bioregion.

The illustrated lecture will be in the Rocklin Campus Library / Learning Resource Center in Room LR 107 beginning at 6 PM. The public is invited to this free lecture, although campus parking permits are required. Parking permits can be purchased for $1 at campus dispensers.
