Give Yosemite Buses a Wide Berth

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Give Yosemite Buses a Wide Berth

Post by Ozark Flip »

I live on hwy 120, a throughfare for these buses. Not a warm fuzzy I'm geting...
A surprise California Highway Patrol commercial bus inspection in Yosemite Valley revealed that only about one in three buses were fit to continue on roadways.
Of the 153 tour buses inspected between June 9 and June 20, only 47 were in good enough shape to be released without being cited or ordered out of service, according to a National Park Service report.

A total of 55 minor fix-it tickets, for violations such as a failed tail light or cracked windshield, were issued.
The CHP handed out 35 written citations and 27 verbal warnings for mechanical problems.
Fourteen percent of the buses inspected were in such bad shape the CHP ordered them out of service.
“The citations were for offenses such as the driver didn’t keep up their log book properly or they didn’t have all the bus maintenance up to date.
“The buses that were taken out of service had problems such as bald tires or failing brakes,” said NPS spokeswoman Kari Cobb.
When a bus is taken out of service, the passengers leave the bus, and it must be fixed on location, or a new bus must be ordered to take passengers to their destination.
The bus driver or company must show proof that the bus is repaired before it can return to service.
Every year, 250,000 people visit Yosemite National Park aboard commercial buses, and every year the CHP and the National Park Service team up to inspect bus safety.
“This is something we do every year to make sure buses are operating safely, not only for the passengers but for other drivers and pedestrians in the park,” Cobb said.
