Weather Warning!

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Weather Warning!

Post by maverick »

If your heading out this week there is a low pressure system coming in
on Thursday that will bring with it thunderstorms, unseasonably cold weather,
temps you would expect to see in spring or early fall, and snow above 10000 ft.
Don't get caught in the back country unprepared!

If you're wrong, you buy me a beer. If you're right, buy me a hot coffee! :D

And remember Backpacker Magazine says you can save weight by not bringing gloves on summer trips!

Ha!

This has to have been one of the worst summers for weather in the Sierra in the past 20 years. I haven't had to use gloves yet, but I'm sick of all the rain.

Well, that sucks. I'm heading in on Thursday...and I'm really not keen on dealing with weather.

I was thinking about the extreme temperature swing I will see by this coming weekend. Up north here in Plumas County, temps at my place were in the upper 80's or so last weekend and by Saturday, I will be up in Alaska with highs in the 60's to 70's if we get lucky, lows in the 30's. Can't decide whether to bring a synthetic jacket or a down vest.
Piece of cake.

So, I was planning to enter via North Lake/Piute Pass tomorrow morning. Since my dates aren't very flexible, will I be better off going somewhere else, say Road's End or Lodgepole? I don't mind cold and snow (I'm from MN after all) but I don't want to drag my girlfriend through dangerous weather or be cooped up in the tent all day. Any thoughts?
