Speckled Rattlesnake?

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Speckled Rattlesnake?

Post by gary c. »

Can anyone ID this rattlesnake for sure? Found it Sunday on a PB trip in the Southern Sierra Wilderness at about 7k elevation. I've never seen one like it but someone said they thought it was a Speckled Rattlesnake. It was about 3ft long and fat with no real noticeable markings or pattern. It was kind of a dark brick or burnt red color. It's not a very good picture because the snake was blown up and cropped from the original pic but trust me it was definately a reddish color and the rattles were about the size of your thumb. I did a search on Speckled Rattlesnake and the description sounds right. I know that I have never seen one before.

Yikes Gary. Another reason I like it higher (10,000+)... no snakes.
