Alabama Hills glyph question (& rescue copter on Sunday?)

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Alabama Hills glyph question (& rescue copter on Sunday?)

Post by calipidder »

My camera and I spent Sunday poking around several Alabama Hills arches, and I came away with 2 questions.

First, it looked like a S&R helicopter was flying out over the Hills from Whitney area - just wondering if everything was okay up there.

Second, for those familiar with the petroglyphs/pictographs near the Balanced Rocks/Three Brothers - they didn't look anything like rock art I've seen before; they were far too symmetric and 'clean'. There was a lizard pictograph that looked more like something you'd see painted on fake indian pottery at a grand canyon gift shop than anything I've seen 'in the wild'.

Our group was split 1/2 and 1/2 on the opinion real vs. movie set fake. It was a very photogenic site with up in a pile of rocks with great views - it would make a great movie set, but then again, I'm sure the Native Americans appreciated the spot as well. I still need to sort through the thousands of shots I took this weekend, but I'll post some as soon as I can. If anyone knows what I'm talking about I'd love to get some info on these glyphs to settle the debate. :)
