Hey folks:

In a tip of the hat to those that have gone before us, I propose that we all celebrate April 21 as Monte Wolfe day. Monte was the “King of the Mokelumne” back in the day, for more info on Monte see this link:

Perhaps have a Spring dinner ala Monte: grill some trout, some Spring vegetables, maybe some fine Sierra foothill wine.

I welcome other suggestions- help me celebrate Monte’s memory!

Have you ever been to MW's cabin? Thats one trip that I've been wanting to do.

You mean the lower one of course- or what's left of it. No I haven't. I have found many parts of his route for quite a ways coming down from Hermit Valley, but have never followed it as far down as the second cabin. It gets pretty bush-wacky and gets high above the river in many places.

Very cool, I enjoyed the photos via your link. I think they have a photo of him in Snowshoe Brewing if I'm not mistaken.

Interesting character from Old West frontier days.

Now I'll know the story behind the name on one of my favorite Kirkwood runs, Monte Wolfe off Cornice Express. During mid winter with good snow depth, the center of that steep face is winch cat groomed maybe every other day. With the 9000 foot top elevation, its groomed slope when snow is mid winter packed powder is a joy I love to short swing down like a bouncing ball. The orientation gets morning sun so tends to soften up nicely in the spring during thaw freeze cycles. Off to the right side is always left ungroomed because lower down are rock bands with narrow chutes to pass through. One of my favorite slopes to practice mogul skiing on because bumps tend to stay small to moderate in size and the wind blown blow in over the cornice keeps loose snow moving around.

There is also Monte Wolfe's Mountain Kitchen at Kirkwood. I have always wondered how many people eat there and have no idea how the place got the name. You can see much of the Mokelumne Wilderness from the top of Thimble Peak.
