FORECAST 20-FEB-09

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

FORECAST FOR THE OWENS VALLEY, MAMMOTH AND MONO COUNTY
PROVIDED BY DENNIS MATTINSON
EASTERN SIERRA WEATHER FORECASTER
KSRW 92.5 / 96.5 FM AND TV-33

FRIDAY, 20-FEB-09, 7:02 AM

SOME HIGH CLOUDS ALREADY ADVANCING AHEAD OF A COMPLEX TROUGH IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC. FOR NOW THOUGH, HIGH PRESSURE STILL DOMINATES THE AREA, GIVING US MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES AND MILD TEMPERATURES THROUGH SATURDAY. LIGHT SHOWERS COULD START TO BREAK OUT FROM THAT TROUGH ON SUNDAY, BUT STILL THE BEST BET FOR PRECIPITATON IS ON MONDAY INTO TUESDAY. THIS SYSTEM WILL HAVE A PRONOUNCED SUB-TROPICAL TAP, THERFORE SNOW LEVELS WILL REMAIN HIGH, FOR THE DURATION OF THE TROUGHS PASSAGE. IF THIS SYSTEM REALLY PANS OUT, WE COULD GET MUCH NEEDED RAIN IN THE OWENS VALLEY AND MORE SNOW IN THE UPPER ELEVATIONS. WE WILL SEE. RIGHT NOW THINGS LOOK TO BE UNSETTLED THROUGH MOST OF NEXT WEEK WITH SOME BREAKS IN THE ACTION. STAY TUNED...

FOR THE OWENS VALLEY:

TODAY: MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 50S. WINDS W 4 - 7 MPH.
TONIGHT: PARTLY CLOUDY. LOWS IN THE UPPER 20S. WINDS NW 5 - 7 MPH.
SATURDAY: PARTLY SUNNY. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 50S. WINDS NW 8 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: MOSTLY CLOUDY. LOWS IN THE LOWER 30S. WINDS N 5 - 7 MPH.

FOR MAMMOTH AND JUNE LAKES:

TODAY: MOSTLY SUNNY. HIGHS IN THE LOWER 40S. WINDS W @ 5 MPH.
TONIGHT: PARTLY CLOUDY. LOWS IN THE MID TEENS. WINDS CALM.
SATURDAY: PARTLY SUNNY. HIGHS IN THE MID 40S. WINDS S @ 5 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 20% CHANCE OF RAIN OR SNOW. SNOW LEVEL 8,500 FT. LOWS IN THE MID 20S. WINDS S @ 10 MPH.

FOR THE REST OF MONO COUNTY:

TODAY: PARTLY SUNNY. HIGHS 39 - 49. WINDS LIGHT.
TONIGHT: PARTLY CLOUDY. LOWS 8 - 18. WINDS LIGHT.
SATURDAY: PARTLY CLOUDY BECOMING MOSTLY CLOUDY. HIGHS 41 - 51. WINDS S @ 10 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A SLIGHT CHANCE OF RAIN OR SNOW. LOWS 22 - 32. WINDS SW @ 10 - 15 MPH.

NOTE: DENNIS' FORECAST ORIGINATES FROM THE FORT INDEPENDENCE EPA METEOROLOGICAL STATION. BECAUSE WEATHER CONDITIONS VARY GREATLY FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION IN THE EASTERN SIERRA, THIS FORECAST IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE.
