FORECAST 06-FEB-09

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

FORECAST FOR THE OWENS VALLEY, MAMMOTH AND MONO COUNTY
PROVIDED BY DENNIS MATTINSON
EASTERN SIERRA WEATHER FORECASTER
KSRW 92.5 / 96.5 FM AND TV-33

FRIDAY, 06-FEB-09, 7:07

SCATTERED LIGHT RAIN IN THE OWENS VALLEY HAS BEEN REPORTED INTO MY OFFICE THIS MORNING, ALONG WITH LIGHT SNOW UP AND DOWN THE SIERRA CREST, INCLUDING ABOUT 13 INCHES OF NEW SNOW ON MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN. SNOW LEVELS HAVE BEEN RUNNING ABOUT 8,500 FEET AT THIS TIME. I EXPECT PERIODS OF SNOW (HEAVY AT TIMES) IN THE UPPER ELEVATIONS AND RAIN IN THE OWENS VALLEY TO CONTINUE TODAY AND SATURDAY (WITH SNOW LEVELS EVENTUALLY LOWERING TO 4,500 FEET IN SOME PLACES TONIGHT) AS A FAIRLY MOIST UPPER LOW MOVES THROUGH THE AREA. SUNDAY LOOKS TO GIVE US A BREAK IN THE ACTION, THEN TWO MORE MODERATE PACIFIC STORMS ARE SET TO EFFECT OUR AREA, ONE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY AND POSSIBLY ANOTHER ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY. WE WILL HAVE UPDATES ON TIMING FOR YOU AS THE SITUATION BECOMES MORE CLEAR.

FOR THE OWENS VALLEY:

TODAY: CLOUDY WITH A 80% CHANCE OF SHOWERS. HIGHS AROUND 49. SOUTHEAST WIND 5 - 15 MPH GUSTING TO 20.
TONIGHT: CLOUDY WITH RAIN EARLY THEN SCATTERED SNOW POSSIBLE. SNOW LEVEL 4,500 FEET. CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION IS 60%. LOWS AROUND 30. SOUTHEAST WIND 10 - 15 MPH.
SATURDAY: CLOUDY WITH A 70% CHANCE OF SHOWERS. HIGHS AROUND 47. NORTHWEST WIND 9 - 13 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 30% CHANCE OF SHOWERS. EVENING LOWS AROUND 28. NORTHWEST WIND 10 - 15 MPH.

FOR MAMMOTH LAKES:

TODAY: CLOUDY WITH A 100% CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS. HIGHS AROUND 30. SOUTH WIND 5 - 10 MPH.
TONIGHT: SNOW SHOWERS WITH LOWS AROUND 23. NORTHEAST WIND 5 MPH.
SATURDAY: CLOUDY WITH AN 80% CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS. HIGHS NEAR 36. NORTHEAST WIND 5 - 10 MPH GUSTING TO 30.
SATURDAY NIGHT: CLOUDY WITH A 30% CHANCE OF SCATTERED SNOW. EVENING LOWS NEAR 25. NORTH WIND 15 MPH GUSTING TO 25.

FOR THE REST OF MONO COUNTY:

TODAY: MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES WITH SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS. HIGHS 32 - 42. SOUTH WIND 10 MPH.
TONIGHT: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH NUMEROUS SNOW SHOWERS. CHANCE OF SNOW 70%. LOWS 18 - 28. NORTHEAST WIND 10 MPH.
SATURDAY: CLOUDY WITH PERIODS OF SNOW. HIGHS 35 - 45. NORTHEAST WIND 10 - 15 MPH. RIDGE GUSTS TO 45.
SATURDAY NIGHT: CLOUDY WITH ISOLATED SNOW SHOWERS. LOWS 14 - 24. NORTHEAST WIND 10 - 15 MPH. RIDGE GUSTS TO 35.

NOTE: DENNIS' FORECAST ORIGINATES FROM THE FORT INDEPENDENCE EPA METEOROLOGICAL STATION. BECAUSE WEATHER CONDITIONS VARY GREATLY FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION IN THE EASTERN SIERRA, THIS FORECAST IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE.
