ROCKLIN - The Sierra College Natural History Museum will present an illustrated lecture entitled "Surveying the Sierra: Then and Now" by zoologist Dr. Jim Patton on Friday, February 27, 2009, at 7:30 PM in Sewell Hall on the Sierra College-Rocklin Campus.

Dr. Patton, Curator and Professor Emeritus of UC Berkeley's Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, retired from the classroom and walked right back into the field to continue his research and the important re-survey of Sierran birds and mammals. From 1911-1914, Joseph Grinnell, co-founder of UC Berkeley's Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, and his students conducted a survey of the vertebrate species in the Sierra Nevada. Nearly 100 years later, researchers retraced the steps of Grinnell to document changes in wildlife distribution and habits since the first survey. The changes due to climate change, landscape alteration, and fire suppression are startling. Patton, who has traveled and studied in all continents except Antarctica, led the field teams that repeated the original Grinnell surveys. The original survey and the resurvey project will be discussed in this illustrated lecture.

Dr. Jim Patton is the Curator and Professor Emeritus of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at the University of California, Berkeley. He has a Doctorate in Zoology from the University of Arizona. He has been a Professor and Museum Curator at the University of California, Berkeley, since 1969. Additionally, Dr. Patton has extensive national and international service, including leadership roles with such organizations as the American Society of Mammalogists, the Charles Darwin Foundation, the National Science Foundation; and the Harvard University Museum of Comparative Zoology. Dr. Patton has published widely and also served on many editorial boards, including Journal of Mammalogy; Evolution; and the Israel Journal of Zoology. From 1980 until recently, he was the Chairman of the Editorial Board for University of California Publications in Zoology.

Patton’s presentation is part of the Sierra College Natural History Museum’s 2008-2009 lecture series, and will be held on Friday, February 27 at 7:30 pm in Sewell Hall, room 111 on the Rocklin Campus. Tickets are available at the door. Prices are General $5 / Students and Seniors $2 / Museum members free. All proceeds benefit the Sierra College Natural History Museum.

The Sierra College Rocklin Campus is located at 5000 Rocklin Road in Rocklin. There is a $1 parking fee on campus. Parking permits are available at dispensers located in the parking lots.
