FORECAST 09-DEC-08

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

FORECAST FOR THE OWENS VALLEY, MAMMOTH AND MONO COUNTY
PROVIDED BY DENNIS MATTINSON
EASTERN SIERRA WEATHER FORECASTER
KSRW 92.5 / 96.5 FM AND TV-33

TUESDAY, 09-DEC-08, 7:00

AN UPPER LEVEL EASTERN PACIFIC RIDGE CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN AND AFTER TODAY TEMPERATURES WILL WARM A FEW DEGREES INTO FRIDAY. THOSE LOCALLY GUSTY WINDS WILL BEGIN TO DECREASE FOR THE VALLEYS AND OVER THE CREST AS TODAY PROGRESSES. THE BIG ISSUE IS THIS WEEKEND AS A STRONG, COLD GULF OF ALASKA STORM BEGINS TO EFFECT OUR AREA OVER THE WEEKEND AND INTO THE EARLY PART OF NEXT WEEK. THIS PATTERN SHIFT AT THE LEAST WILL BRING A PERIOD OF UNSETTLED WEATHER ACROSS OUR AREA. WHAT IS UNCERTAIN RIGHT NOW IS THE EXTENT OF THE PRECIPITATION WE WILL HAVE. WHAT IS CERTAIN THOUGH IS THAT WE WILL HAVE CLOUDY SKIES, WINDY CONDITIONS, VERY COLD AIR AND AN ONGOING THREAT OF SHOWERS STARTING ON SATURDAY INTO ABOUT TUESDAY.

FOR THE OWENS VALLEY:

TODAY: SUNNY SKIES WITH HIGHS AROUND 55. NORTH WIND 10 - 15 MPH GUSTING TO 23.
TONIGHT: MOSTLY CLEAR WITH OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE LOW 20S. NORTHWEST WIND LIGHT.
WEDNESDAY: SUNNY. DAYTIME HIGHS AROUND 63. NORTHWEST WIND 5 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: MOSTLY CLEAR. EVENING LOWS NEAR 23. NORTH WIND 5 MPH.

FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES:

TODAY: SUNNY SKIES WITH DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 45. EAST WIND 5 MPH.
TONIGHT: MOSTLY CLEAR WITH EVENING LOWS AROUND 19. EAST WIND LIGHT.
WEDNESDAY: SUNNY SKIES WITH DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 50. CALM WIND.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: MOSTLY CLEAR WITH EVENING LOWS NEAR 21. WEST WIND 5 MPH.

FOR THE REST OF MONO COUNTY:

TODAY: SUNNY WITH HIGHS RANGING FROM 37 - 47. NORTHEAST WIND 10 - 15 MPH WITH RIDGE TOP GUSTS TO 75 DECREASING TO 55 LATER THIS MORNING.
TONIGHT: CLEAR WITH LOWS FROM 12 TO 22. LIGHT WIND.
WEDNESDAY: SUNNY WITH HIGHS FROM 45 TO 55. LIGHT WIND.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: CLEAR WITH OVERNIGHT LOWS FROM 13 - 23. LIGHT WIND.

NOTE: DENNIS' FORECAST ORIGINATES FROM THE FORT INDEPENDENCE EPA METEOROLOGICAL STATION. BECAUSE WEATHER CONDITIONS VARY GREATLY FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION IN THE EASTERN SIERRA, THIS FORECAST IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE.
