According to a recent Yosemite Press release, the NPS has decided to close 1/3 of the accommodations at Curry Villageā€¦ including 233 visitor accommodations, some employee housing, and a shower house.

Maybe I am reading this wrong, but it appears that all the retail establishments located there: the Pizza deck, pool, and cafeteria will still remain open, along with the small food store, climbing shop, and gift shop.

Got to love the priorities of Yosemite.

Actually, Curry Village is in fact more impacted by rockfall than other commercial ventures in the valley. I happen to know the park geologist and a graduate student who have been researching the rockfall hazard. That having been said, the actual loss of life and such in the target area, would be well short of the number of highway deaths on 41, or 140, or 120 of drivers and passengers en route to the Valley during the same period. I'm pretty sure it is well short of the number of drownings at the infamous Junction Meadow-Bubbs Creek crossing during the same period. However, I guess the legal folks see the driving mishaps and the failed leaps across Bubbs Creek as an assumed risk in contrast to staying in or wandering about the Curry Village area. I think the Park Service response is very much in keeping with public perception, which is very flawed when it comes to recognizing comparative risks but is nonetheless the arbiter in court.
