FORECAST 29-OCT-08 (STORM WATCH)

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

WEDNESDAY, 29-OCT-08, 7:04 AM

ANOTHER NICE WARM FALL DAY TODAY BEFORE A CHANGE IN OUR WEATHER ON THURSDAY. A WEAK LOW WILL START TO MOVE THROUGH THE REGION TOMORROW ALONG WITH SOME SUB TROPICAL MOISTURE, SO I CAN'T RULE OUT HIGH BASED SCATTERED RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS OVER THE SIERRA AND WHITE MOUNTAINS. THIS IS THE FIRST OF SEVERAL MORE IMPULSES THAT WILL BRING AN END TO OUR PROLONGED DRY PERIOD. ON FRIDAY ANOTHER FRONTAL SYSTEM WILL MOVE THROUGH WITH A HIGHER CHANCE OF VALLEY SHOWERS AND UPPER ELEVATION SNOW. THEN A STRONGER SYSTEM MOVES THROUGH SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY. NOW THIS SYSTEM DOES INDEED LOOK QUITE WET AND I EXPECT SNOW TO FALL ABOVE THE 9,500 FEET LEVEL TO START THEN DROPPING DOWN AS THE SYSTEM MOVES THROUGH BRINGING COLDER ARE ALONG WITH IT. THERE WILL BE LINGERING SHOWERS ON MONDAY BEFORE THE WHOLE SYSTEM MOVES EASTWARD WITH TEMPERATURES BELOW NORMAL INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK.

FOR THOSE CONSIDERING GOING INTO THE HIGH COUNTRY, I EXPECT 3- 5 FEET OF NEW SNOW OVER THE WEEKEND IN THE UPPER ELEVATIONS ABOVE 10,000 FEET AND VERY WINDY CONDITIONS.

TODAY FOR THE OWENS VALLEY: MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES BECOMING PARTLY CLOUDY. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE AROUND 81 FOLLOWED BY OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE UPPER 30S. SOUTHEAST WIND 8 - 11 MPH.

THURSDAY FOR THE OWENS VALLEY: PARTLY SUNNY BECOMING MOSTLY CLOUDY AND BREEZY. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE AROUND 79 AND OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE UPPER 30S. SOUTH WIND 9 - 12 MPH INCREASING TO 20 - 30 GUSTING 37 THEN DECREASING TO 10 - 15 LATER IN THE EVENING.

TODAY FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES: MOSTLY SUNNY BECOMING PARTLY CLOUDY. DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE AROUND 64 AND EVENING LOWS AROUND 34. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 - 15 MPH.

THURSDAY FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE SCATTERED RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS. CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION IS 30% DURING THE DAY AND 50% IN THE EVENING. DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE AROUND 59 AND EVENING LOWS NEAR 34. SOUTH WIND 15 - 20 GUSTING TO 35 MPH .

TODAY FOR MONO COUNTY: MOSTLY SUNNY BECOMING PARTLY CLOUDY. HIGH DAYTIME TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM 60 - 70 AND EVENING LOWS 24 - 34. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 - 15 MPH.

THURSDAY FOR MONO COUNTY: WINDY AND MOSTLY CLOUDY. ISOLATED SHOWERS DURING THE DAY BECOMING A MIX OF RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS LATER IN THE EVENING. CHANCE OF PRECIPT IS 30% DURING THE DAY BECOMING 50% LATER IN THE EVENING. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM 56 - 66 AND OVERNIGHT LOWS 31 - 41. SOUTH WIND 15 - 25 GUSTING TO 45 MPH WITH RIDGE GUSTS TO 80.

NOTE: DENNIS' FORECAST ORIGINATES FROM THE FORT INDEPENDENCE EPA METEOROLOGICAL STATION. BECAUSE WEATHER CONDITIONS VARY GREATLY FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION IN THE EASTERN SIERRA, THIS FORECAST IS FOR A SPECIFIC AREA AND TIME FRAME.
