FOECAST 10-OCT-08

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

FORECAST FOR THE OWENS VALLEY, MAMMOTH AND MONO COUNTY
PROVIDED BY DENNIS MATTINSON
EASTERN SIERRA WEATHER FORECASTER
KSRW 92.5 / 96.5 FM AND TV-33

FRIDAY, 10-OCT-08, 7:01 AM

A COLD LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL CONTINUE TO IMPACT US AS IT DIGS SOUTHWARD INTO OUR AREA THROUGH THE WEEKEND. I EXPECT EVEN COOLER TEMPERATURES, WINDY CONDITIONS, VALLEY RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW LATER TODAY AND SATURDAY. THE COLDEST AIR OF THE SEASON WILL OCCUR OVER THE WEEKEND. WIND ADVISORIES HAVE BEEN HOISTED FOR THE EASTERN SIERRA AND OWENS VALLEY UNTIL EARLY SATURDAY MORNING. I DON'T EXPECT MUCH SNOW ACCUMULATION OVER THE CREST BUT 2- 4 INCHES IS POSSIBLE. ALSO, SOME SCATTERED RAIN IN THE VALLEYS WILL PROBABLY HAPPEN TONIGHT INTO SATURDAY. SUNNY SKIES ARE EXPECTED ON SUNDAY AS HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS IN. CONTINUED DRY WITH TEMPERATURES REBOUNDING BACK TO ABOUT NORMAL TOWARDS END OF NEXT WEEK.

TODAY FOR THE OWENS VALLEY: MOSTLY SUNNY BECOMING MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS POSSIBLE. CHANCE OF PRECIPT IS ABOUT 40% LATER TODAY. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE NEAR 59 FOLLOWED BY OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE MID 30S. NORTHWEST WIND 15 - 25 GUSTING TO 40 MPH IN THE AFTERNOON.

SATURDAY FOR THE OWENS VALLEY: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH ISOLATED SHOWERS POSSIBLE. CHANCE OF PRECIPT IN 20%. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE NEAR 55 AND OVERNIGHT LOWS AROUND 31. NORTH WIND 20 - 30 MPH GUSTING TO 40 THEN REDUCING TO 10 - 15 GUSTING TO 20.

TODAY FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES: BECOMING MOSTLY CLOUDY AS THE DAY PROGRESSES. SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS POSSIBLE DURING THE DAY BECOMING SNOW LIKELY IN THE EVENING. CHANCE OF PRECIPT IS 80% TONIGHT. DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE NEAR 38 AND EVENING LOWS AROUND 15. NORTHWEST WIND 10 - 15 MPH GUSTING TO 30.

SATURDAY FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY. CHANCE OF PRECIPT IS 40% DURING THE DAY, REDUCING TO 20% IN THE EVENING. DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE AROUND 35 AND EVENING LOWS NEAR 16. NORTH WIND 10 - 15 MPH.

TODAY FOR MONO COUNTY: BECOMING MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS LATER TODAY. SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY TONIGHT. HIGH DAYTIME TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM 41 - 51 AND EVENING LOWS 5 - 15. NORTH WIND 10 - 20 MPH GUSTING TO 30 WITH RIDGE TOP GUSTS TO 60.

SATURDAY FOR MONO COUNTY: MOSTLY CLOUDY AND BRISK WITH A CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM 38 - 48 AND OVERNIGHT LOWS 13 - 23. NORTH WIND 10 - 20 MPH GUSTING TO 30 WITH RIDGE TOP GUSTS TO 55 REDUCING TO 10 - 15 LATER IN THE EVENING.

NOTE: DENNIS' FORECAST ORIGINATES FROM THE FORT INDEPENDENCE EPA METEOROLOGICAL STATION. BECAUSE WEATHER CONDITIONS VARY GREATLY FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION IN THE EASTERN SIERRA, THIS FORECAST IS FOR A SPECIFIC AREA AND TIME FRAME.
