Burns planned in Yosemite

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Burns planned in Yosemite

Burns planned in Yosemite
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK - Yosemite National Park staff in the coming weeks hope to create several fires in Yosemite Valley.

A burn is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, weather permitting, east of the El Capitan picnic area. If all goes well, crews will conduct another burn the following week east of Bridalveil Meadow.

In all, the two burns measure about 79 acres. Both areas have been burned in the past as part of the park's efforts to maintain the health of the valley's vegetation.

Fire, both set by lightning and human started, has for centuries been a part of the valley's ecosystem, periodically cleaning out underbrush and maintaining the park-like setting beloved by park visitors. Fire helps recycle nutrients to the soil, which aids the sprouting and regrowth of plants, shrubs and trees.

Park staffers will monitor the smoke but warn visitors that smoky conditions are likely through the project and may linger for several days once each burn is completed. Smoke is likely along Northside Drive and in the Yosemite Lodge area.
