FORECAST 29-AUG-08

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

FRIDAY, 29-AUG-08, 7:06 AM

THE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR HOT TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE TO STRENGTHEN TODAY. THUS TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE LOW 100S IN THE OWENS VALLEY AND THE MID 80S IN MAMMOTH, NOT RECORD SETTING, BUT STILL HOT NONE THE LESS. A BIG CHANGE IN OUR WEATHER IS ON ITS HOWEVER, AS A VERY COLD TROUGH OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA CONTINUES TO DEVELOP AND WILL MOVE THROUGH BRITISH COLUMBIA ON SATURDAY AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ON SUNDAY. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR US IS SLIGHT COOLING TOMORROW, THEN STRONGER COOLING ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY. BY LABOR DAY WE WILL HAVE A REAL TASTE OF FALL, WITH DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES DROPPING TO THE LOW 80S / NIGHTTIME LOWS IN THE UPPER 40S FOR THE OWENS VALLEY. MAMMOTH WITH STRUGGLE TO REACH 60 DURING THE DAY WITH NIGHTTIME LOWS IN THE UPPER 30S. ALSO, BECAUSE OF THAT TROUGH, WINDS WILL PICK UP STARTING TOMORROW, WITH GUSTS TO 25 MPH AND 40 MPH ON SUNDAY IN THE HIGH COUNTRY WITH RIDGE TOP GUSTS TO +60 MPH. BY MONDAY, WINDS WILL FALL BACK TO GENERALLY LIGHT AND VARIABLE. AS FAR AS THUNDERSTORMS GO, SOME MID LEVEL MOISTURE WILL SNEAK OVER THE CREST TODAY & TOMORROW, GIVING THE HIGH COUNTRY A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS.

BACKCOUNTRY TREKKERS SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE WEATHER CHANGE FROM SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY AND BE PREPARED FOR COOL TEMPERATURES, HIGH WINDS AND EVEN THE POSSIBLLITY OF SNOW!
