FORECAST 03-JUL-08

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

FORECAST FOR THE OWENS VALLEY, MAMMOTH AND MONO COUNTY
PROVIDED BY DENNIS MATTINSON
EASTERN SIERRA WEATHER FORECASTER

THURSDAY, 03-JUL-08, 7:01 AM

OUR FORECAST AREA WILL STILL BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF HIGH PRESSURE THROUGH THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. A WEAK UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL PASS THROUGH TODAY KICKING UP THE WINDS A BIT THIS AFTERNOON. THESE WINDS WILL INITIALLY HELP TO CLEAR OUT THE SMOKE BUT THAT SMOKE WILL BE PUMPED BACK INTO OUR AREA AGAIN AS THE WINDS DECEASE LATER THIS EVENING. ISOLATED CONVECTION WILL OCCUR OVER THE HIGH COUNTRY, PARTICULARLY IN MONO COUNTY, SO A SLIGHT CHANCE OF AFTERNOON T-STORMS ARE POSSIBLE FRIDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING. THE RIDGE WILL GET EVEN STRONGER ON SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY ELEVATING TEMPERATURES TO THE LOW 100S IN THE OWENS VALLEY AND NEAR 80 IN MAMMOTH.

AIR QUALITY LEVELS IN THE OWENS VALLEY AND THE HIGH COUNTRY HAVE BEEN QUITE POOR AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE SO FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. PM-2.5 LEVELS HAVE BEEN ABOVE THE ACCEPTABLE LIMITS SET BY THE EPA FOR SOME TIME NOW. CAUTION SHOULD BE EXERCISED FOR HIKERS WITH UPPER RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS GOING INTO THE BACK COUNTRY.

TODAY FOR THE OWENS VALLEY: MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES AND HOT. WIDESPREAD HAZE AND SMOKE. HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 90S/LOW 100S AND EVENING LOWS IN THE MID 50S. SOUTHEAST WIND 15 - 20 MPH GUSTING TO 30 THEN BECOMING NORTHWEST 7 - 11.

TOMORROW FOR THE OWENS VALLEY: SUNNY AND HOT AGAIN WITH TEMPS NEAR THE CENTURY MARK. AREAS OF HAZE AND SMOKE. HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 90S/LOW 100S AND EVENING LOWS IN THE UPPER 50S. WEST WIND 5 - 10 MPH.

TODAY FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES: SUNNY SKIES WITH WIDESPREAD AREAS OF SMOKE. SLIGHT CHANCE OF ISOLATED T-STORMS. HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 77 EVENING LOWS AROUND 47. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 - 15 MPH GUSTING TO 25.

TOMORROW FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES: SUNNY WITH SMOKE AND HAZE. HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 76 AND EVENING LOWS AROUND 46. SOUTHWEST WIND 5 - 15 MPH GUSTING TO 25.

TODAY FOR MONO COUNTY: SUNNY AND HAZY. HIGH TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 80 - 90 AND EVENING LOWS 39 - 49. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 - 15 MPH.

TOMORROW FOR MONO COUNTY: SUNNY WITH HAZE AND SMOKE. HIGH TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 80 - 90 AND EVENING LOWS 44 - 55. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 - 15 MPH GUSTING TO 30.

NOTE: DENNIS' FORECAST ORIGINATES FROM THE FORT INDEPENDENCE EPA METEOROLOGICAL STATION. BECAUSE WEATHER CONDITIONS VARY GREATLY FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION IN THE EASTERN SIERRA, THIS FORECAST IS FOR A SPECIFIC AREA AND TIME FRAME.
