FORECAST 22-MAY-08

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

FORECAST FOR THE OWENS VALLEY, MAMMOTH AND MONO COUNTY
PROVIDED BY DENNIS MATTINSON
EASTERN SIERRA WEATHER FORECASTER
BROADCASTING ON THE SIERRAWAVE 92.5 / 96.5 FM

THURSDAY, 22-MAY-08, 7:00 AM

AS FORECAST, A SIGNIFICANT COOL DOWN HAS OCCURRED ACROSS OUR AREA ALONG WITH SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS AND VERY WINDY CONDITIONS. SNOW HAS BEEN REPORTED ALL ALONG THE CREST, AT THE 8,000 FOOT LEVEL, FROM MONO COUNTY DOWN TO THE WHITNEY AREA. AS OF 7 AM THIS MORNING, MAMMOTH HAD ALREADY RECEIVED SEVERAL INCHES AND SNOW AND SHOWERS WERE CONTINUING. GRADIENTS WILL RELAX A BIT TODAY SO IT WONT BE QUITE AS WINDY AS IT HAS BEEN, BUT STILL BREEZY. THERE WILL BE SEVERAL MORE IMPULSES ROTATING THROUGH OUR AREA CREATING UNSETTLED WEATHER FRIDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND WITH AN OFF AND ON CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. ANOTHER LOW IS SET TO MOVE THROUGH OUR AREA BRINGING MORE UNSETTLED WEATHER THROUGH THE MID PART OF NEXT WEEK. AND RIGHT NOW IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE WINDS WILL PLAY A VERY SIGNIFICANT ROLE WITH THIS DISTURBANCE.

TODAY FOR THE OWENS VALLEY: PARTLY TO MOSTLY CLOUDY AND BREEZY. HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE MID 60S AND EVENING LOWS IN THE UPPER 30S. NORTHWEST WIND 15 - 20 MPH THEN DECREASING TO 6 - 9 LATE IN THE EVENING.

TOMORROW FOR THE OWENS VALLEY: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 20% CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS IN THE AFTERNOON. HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 60S AND EVENING LOWS IN THE LOWER 40S. NORTH WIND 5 - 10.

TODAY FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES: PARTLY CLOUDY WITH SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS. HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 40 AND EVENING LOWS AROUND 29. NORTH WIND 5 - 15 GUSTING TO 25.

TOMORROW FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 30% CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 45 AND EVENING LOWS AROUND 30. NORTH WIND 5 - 10 MPH BECOMING SOUTHWEST.

TODAY FOR MONO COUNTY: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH ISOLATED SNOW SHOWERS. HIGH TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 46 - 56 AND EVENING LOWS 29 - 37. NORTH WIND 10 - 20 MPH GUSTING TO 35 THEN DECREASING TO 10 MPH IN THE EVENING. RIDGE TOP GUSTS CONTINUING TO 50 MPH.

TOMORROW FOR MONO COUNTY: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS. HIGH TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 48 - 58 AND EVENING LOWS 30 -40. NORTH WIND 10 MPH BECOMING SOUTHWEST.

NOTE: DENNIS' FORECAST ORIGINATES FROM THE FORT INDEPENDENCE EPA METEOROLOGICAL STATION. BECAUSE WEATHER CONDITIONS VARY GREATLY FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION IN THE EASTERN SIERRA, THIS FORECAST IS FOR A SPECIFIC AREA AND TIME FRAME.
