Forest service describes Interface trail system

Some 60 people turned out Tuesday night at the Avery Middle School Library for the first public meeting to plan an ambitious trail system that would stretch from White Pines to Avery in a broad loop on both sides of Highway 4.

“The concept is, there would be a whole circular route that would connect all the communities and subdivisions,” said Patti Clarey, the Calaveras Ranger District's recreation officer with the U.S. Forest Service. Only about half of the trails envisioned under the plan are presently in existence, most of them on the north side of the highway.

Called the Arnold Rim Trail, the non-motorized route would link the giant Sequoia groves of Calaveras Big Trees State Park, White Pines Lake, the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum, the North Fork of the Stanislaus River, lava outcroppings and San Antonio Falls-the latter a spectacular but little known natural feature of the area.
