fall aspen leaf cold weather damage

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

fall aspen leaf cold weather damage

From my week long fall foliage road trip October 3 thru 9 this month, I've uploaded a page to my website with some natural history information on aspen leaves and the damage to leaf color that can result from exceptionally cold weather as we had during the storm of Friday October 5. The above picture of the well known groves north of Conway Summit was taken on Wednesday mid day October 3 while the one below, late morning Saturday October 6. One will note how the distant higher, more exposed to wind groves lost their brilliant yellow color as well as many leaves and how the nearer grove trees are much more brownish orange. From my below homepage, select the "Fall 2007...Aspen Groves in Snow" sub-page link which focuses on aspen leaves and damage in the first half of the page before going in my road trip report. I'll welcome any other's observations on what they have observed as there aren't many hard facts on the subject. ...David
