dmatt logbook @ Onion Valley 10/17/07

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

I THOUGHT SOME OF YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN MY DAILY LOGBOOK FOR THE ONION VALLEY AREA TODAY. THIS IS IN CONJUNCTION WITH A PROJECT I AM DOING TO MEASURE LEVELS OF PM-10 IN MORE REMOTE AREAS IN AND AROUND THE TOWN OF INDEPENDENCE. THE MEASUREMENT CYCLE FOR ONION VALLEY AND LOWER POTHOLE LAKE IS BI-WEEKLY. IT SHOULD GIVE YOU A GOOD IDEA OF THE WEATHER CONDITIONS TODAY IN THE AREA.

DATE: 10/17/07

PROJECT PERIOD: 01 JUN – 31 OCT

FIELD EQUIPMENT USED:

1 EA. KESTREL 4500 WEATHER TRACKER
1 EA. THERMO ELECTRON pDR-1000 DATA RAM
1 EA. IRIDIUM 9505a SATELLITE PHONE

ARRIVED AT ONION VALLEY AT 11:03 AM; ONLY 3 VEHICLES IN PARKING LOT, ONE OF WHICH WAS AS CALIFORNIA DEPT. OF FISH AND GAME TRUCK. WEATHER VERY NICE FOR MID OCTOBER AFTER A STORM. CURRENT WEATHER CONDITIONS:

MOSTLY CLEAR
TEMP 43 DEGREES F
WIND SP / 8 - 12 G 18
WIND DR / NW
PM-10 0.0023 ug/m3
1-2 INCHES OF NEW SNOW HAS FALLEN LAST NIGHT/EARLY THIS MORNING.

STARTED UP THE TRAIL TOWARDS LOWER POTHOLE LAKE (USED AS A PM-10 MEASUREMENT POINT) AND NEAR THE JUNCTION OF THE MAIN TRAIL AND GOLDEN TROUT LAKES TRAIL SIGHTED A YOUNG BOBCAT ALREADY STARTING A GOOD WINTER COAT. SPOTTY SNOW ON TRIAL IN SHADED AREAS SHOWED BOOT TRACKS INDICATING ONE TREKKER AHEAD OF ME SOMETIME EARLIER THIS MORNING. REACHED LOWER POTHOLE LAKE AT 11:39 AM; LAKE CLEAR OF ICE EXCEPT FOR SHADED AREAS ALONG THE EDGE; CURRENT WEATHER CONDITIONS:

MOSTLY CLEAR
TEMP 39 DEGREES F
WIND SP / 7 - 15 G 21
WIND DR / W
PM-10 0.0009 ug/m3

HEADED BACK DOWN TO THE PARKING LOT AT 11:47 AM; SAW NO ONE ON THE TRAIL EITHER WAY; ARRIVED AT ONION VALLEY PARKING LOT AT AROUND 12:15 PM.
