Rain Rain go away, Flash flooding, not ok.

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

And now I80 will be closed for at least two days in both directions. SR89 is closed to Tahoe and north from Truckee, so all those tourists in Reno for New Years are going to make driving back through South Lake and US50 an absolute nightmare. Especially if they get caught up in snow over Echo Summit which will occur as soon as the next storm forecast for later New Years Day arrives. I can imagine people stuck in totally inescapable gridlock on US50, without sensible winter travel gear in their cars, and tortured by gnawing hangovers.

Hope you're doing OK down there! Pretty darn messy on the north side of Carson today!

As of this morning, there were only two ways to get out of Reno (conventionally): up 395 thru Susanville, or over Geiger Pass. Course, getting to either of those two areas was darn near impossible cuz of flooding! Lots of road closures, and as Dave said, I80 is gonna be closed between Verdi and Truckee for a couple days! I80 east is supposed to close later tonite when the Truckee crests out near Vista Blvd, so they say. Looks like it'll be a wet New Years! :p

It's only just started easing up for now, and I just spotted a little patch of blue sky out there! ;) So goes my plan for a nice two-nighter out near Red Lake! Maybe next weekend or the weekend of the 16th (3day weekend for me!).

If there is one route open, it always leads to work! 3:50 PM here, looks like the storm has broke, winds diminished and out of the west, Baro rising, temps slowly falling now. Blue skies poking out, visibility to the top of the Carson Range west of town. Done for now? The winds earlier today were very potent! I see Kirkwood has been closed all day, on wind holds is my guess.

Yeah, looks like blue sky out the window, finally. Wind nasty off and on all day here, but it's calm. I'll probably head out to Pyramid Lake area tomorrow in search of some desert/snow-capped peaks shots. Have to try to reclaim a little bit of this weekend! Mt Rose is supposed to open tonite according to the news, so hopefully tomorrow will be bright and clear for some skiing or snowshoe'ing!

...TRAVEL IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED TODAY. MANY AREA ROADS ARE CLOSED
DUE TO FLOODING...MUD SLIDES...ROCK SLIDES...AND SNOW COVER. THIS
INCLUDES INTERSTATE 80...THE MOUNT ROSE HIGHWAY AND GEIGER GRADE. IF
YOU ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL ON FLOODED OR SNOW COVERED ROADS YOU ARE
PUTTING YOUR LIFE AND THE LIVES OF RESCUE...LAW ENFORCEMENT AND
UTILITY PERSONNEL AT RISK!!!...

.UPDATE...
SITUATION GOING FROM FROM WORSE TO EVEN WORSE. MAJOR FLOOD EVENT
ONGOING IN THE SIERRA AND WESTERN NEVADA. MANY ROADS ARE CLOSED DUE
TO MUD SLIDES...ROCK SLIDES AND SNOW COVER. SNOW TOTALS IN THE
HIGHER ELEVATIONS HAVE EXCEEDED 3 FEET.

STRONG SHORT WAVE IS WORKING INTO NORTHERN CALIFNORIA WITH A STRONG
LINE OF CONVECTION MOVING INTO THE SIERRA. A JET MAX IS MIXED IN
THE FLOW TOO...WINDS OVER THE SIERRA CREST ARE GUSTING AS HIGH AS
160 MPH. WINDS A BIG PROBLEM NOW AS WELL..WIND DAMAGE REPORTS JUST
COMING IN FROM SOUTH LAKE TAHOE...WHERE WINDS ARE GUSTING TO AT

ANOTHER STORM ON THE WAY FOR SUNDAY NIGHT. LOOKS LIKE LOWER SNOW
LEVELS WHICH IS DEPERATELY NEEDED TO REDUCING FLOOD PROBLEMS.
HOWEVER I AM WORKING ON A WINTER STORM WATCH. BRONG

Winterfest 2006 ended early, late yesterday (12/30), due to info supplied by a FS employee at Bunny Flat (Mt Shasta) to some of our group. He said we could receive 6' of snow by Sunday night. I missed the group on Thursday, but caught up with them on Friday afternoon after the road was plowed so I could make it up to the top. In the three hours I was at camp the parking lot received anothe 10" to 12" of snow. We bailed and I ended up heading home, I got home real early this morning. Good thing I guess, highway 70 east of Jarbo Gap was closed due to a rock slide, must have been the one I passed. I would have had to go up 32 or 36 to access 70. Then 89 was closed for awhile just north of the Greenville wye where 70 and 89 join again. Heavy rain here last night, actually early this morning since I got home early in the morning. I live on a creek, but it just made lots of noise, expanded its area some, but really a roaring.
