WEATHER FORECAST 08/27/07

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE OWENS VALLEY AND MAMMOTH AREA
PROVIDED BY DENNIS MATTINSON
EASTERN SIERRA WEATHER FORECASTER
BROADCASTING ON THE SIERRAWAVE 92.5 / 96.5 FM

LAST UPDATE: 8:14 AM PDT AUG 27, 2007

AS WE DISCUSSED IN FRIDAY'S FORECAST, MOIST AIR FROM OLD HURRICANE DEAN DID IN FACT MOVE INTO OUR AREA, LOWERING TEMPERATURES AND CAUSING THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY UP AND DOWN THE SIERRA CREST. THERE WILL BE A CONTINUATION OF SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH AT LEAST TODAY AND TOMORROW OVER BOTH THE HIGH COUNTRY AND THE OWENS VALLEY. THE "ZACA" FIRE IN SANTA BARBRA COUNTY IS NOW 90% CONTAINED, GREATLY REDUCING THE CHANCE OF SMOKE IN THE VALLEYS.

TODAY FOR BISHOP AND THE OWENS VALLEY: PARTLY TO MOSTLY CLOUDY. 20% CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS WITH ISOLATED RAIN POSSIBLE ON THE VALLEY FLOOR. HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 94. LOW TEMPERATURE RANGE 54 - 63. SOUTHEAST WIND 10 MPH.

TOMORROW FOR BISHOP AND THE OWENS VALLEY: PARTLY TO MOSTLY CLOUDY. CONTINUED 20% CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORM ACTION. HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 95. LOW TEMPERATURE RANGE 56 - 62. SOUTH WIND 10 - 15 MPH.

TODAY FOR THE MAMMOTH AREA: PARTLY CLOUDY WITH ISOLATED RAIN POSSIBLE. HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 79 FOR THE MAIN LODGE AND THE UPPER 80S FOR THE MONO VALLEYS. LOW TEMPERATURE RANGE 49 - 61. SOUTHWEST WIND 5 - 15 MPH.

TOMORROW FOR THE MAMMOTH AREA: PARTLY CLOUDY WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS . HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 80 FOR THE MAIN LODGE AND THE LOW 90S FOR THE MONO VALLEYS. LOW TEMPERATURE RANGE 48 - 57. WEST WIND 10 - 15 MPH.

STRONG HIGH PRESSURE WILL REBUILD BACK INTO CALIFORNIA FROM THE DESERT SOUTHWEST BY MIDWEEK AND REMAIN WITH US THROUGH AT LEAST SATURDAY. THIS WILL PRODUCE A SIGNIFICANT WARMING TREND AND TEMPS WILL WARM UP TO THE TRIPLE DIGITS IN THE OWENS VALLEY AND THE MID TO UPPER 80S FOR MAMMOTH BY FRIDAY.

Glad to see a good bout of thunderstorms finally move in over the higher areas. I've had 8 backpacks into the range in the last 3 months and it has gotten miserably dry the last few weeks. ...David
