WEATHER FORECAST 08/17/07

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE OWENS VALLEY AND MAMMOTH AREA
PROVIDED BY DENNIS MATTINSON
EASTERN SIERRA WEATHER FORECASTER
BROADCASTING ON THE SIERRAWAVE 92.5 / 96.5 FM

LAST UPDATE: 7:46 AM PDT AUG 17, 2007

SMOKE FROM THE ZACA FIRE WILL LOWER TEMPERATURES TODAY A BIT FROM PREVIOUSLY FORECAST AND RAISE HUMIDITY LEVELS. A COMBINATION OF INVERSION AND A SOUTHWEST FLOW WILL ALLOW THE SMOKE TO LINGER ACROSS OUR AREA FROM THE VALLEYS TO THE HIGH COUNTRY FOR AT LEAST SEVERAL MORE DAYS. CURRENTLY THAT FIRE HAS DROPPED TO ONLY 59% CONTAINMENT WITH 134,396 ACRES BURNED WITH TOTAL COST TO DATE OF 76.2 MILLION DOLLARS. ON TO THE WEATHER WHICH SHOWS CUMULUS FORMING ACROSS THE RIDGE TOPS TODAY, DRY CONDITIONS AND TEMPERATURES AROUND NORMAL.

TODAY FOR BISHOP AND THE OWENS VALLEY: MOSTLY SUNNY. HAZE AND SMOKE VISIBLE THROUGH OUT THE DAY. HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 98 AND DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE IN THE OWENS VALLEY, LOW TEMPERATURE RANGE WILL BE 61 - 69. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 MPH.

TOMORROW FOR BISHOP AND THE OWENS VALLEY: MOSTLY SUNNY. HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 90S AND LOW TEMPERATURE RANGE 60 - 68. SOUTH WIND 15 - 25 MPH WITH SOME GUSTS UP TO 35.

TODAY FOR THE MAMMOTH AREA: MOSTLY CLEAR WITH SOME AREAS OF HAZE AND SMOKE IN THE MORNING. HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE LOW 80S FOR THE MAIN LODGE AND LOW 90S FOR THE MONO VALLEYS. LOW TEMPERATURE RANGE 45 - 55. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 - 15 MPH.

TOMORROW FOR THE MAMMOTH AREA: SUNNY. HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 79 FOR THE MAIN LODGE AND 89 FOR THE MONO VALLEYS. LOW TEMPERATURE RANGE 42 - 52. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 - 20 MPH GUSTING TO 30 IN THE EVENING.

THE SOUTHWEST FLOW CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN AHEAD OF A TROUGH PUSHING THROUGH THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. I EXPECT WINDS TO KICK UP OVER THE WEEKEND, CREATING POSSIBLE RED FLAG WARNING CONDITIONS IN SOME AREAS. AND RIGHT NOW, IT LOOKS LIKE A WARMING TREND WILL BEGIN NEXT MONDAY AS HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS IN OVER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WITH LIGHTER WINDS EXPECTED ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY.
