Not necessarily surprised@c9h13no3, just that 40-1 statement is another good reminder not to caught in an avalanche in 1st place.

I don't think I have become any more inured to dangers and risk as I age. Many comments given above I think are true. My main concern might be with internet trip reports such as what I and others offer, and GPS, the barrier of entry might seem lower to young people with lots of energy but lacking experience and training.
