Why we hate Google--they lost our website

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Why we hate Google--they lost our website

Post by balzaccom »

When we first set up our website on Google sites, we chose that option because it allowed us to easily transfer photos from our Picasa photo pages to our website.

Then Google discontinued Picasa, and moved everything over to Google photos, which meant that all of our photo links were dead. It took us months to move them all over....grrrrr.

And then late last year Google announced that their Google Sites software was changing, and the platform we used for our website would no longer be supported. Now that's what I call customer service--what a ridiculous policy.

So we moved our entire site over to the new Google Sites platform. It's not as good for our purposed, doesn't all text wrapping for example, and it took hours and hours of time for us to move every page over.

And now Google itself can't find the new version of the site. We've talked to our domain host provider, Go-Daddy, who says that we've done everything right.

We've searched the Google help boards, which have a lot of other people with the same issue---search for us at backpackthesierra.com and you get the dreaded 404 message.

We hate Google with a passion.

So just in case you were looking for our site, you CAN still find it here, I think, if Google hasn't screwed this up too:

And we'll keep working on a solution. thanks to everyone who has contacted us about the problem. Maybe send a hate mail letter to Google...oh, don't bother. They read all your emails anyway.

Yes--except I am still hoping to fix this somehow. If I can't do that in the next couple of days, I will have to go back and change a LOT of things.

God I hate Google

Probably won't be a fix. Pick gods carefully. :)

I'm sorry to hear that Google web services have been so frustrating. Since Google offers these services for "free" (actually, you pay by being tracked and targeted with ads), they don't seem to feel the same obligation to their customers that a paid service would. Personally, I have avoided all "free" internet services. I pay for web hosting and email because I want a straightforward business transaction where the service provider needs to keep its customers happy.

Sorry you are having issues. Are you sure you have DNS pointed correctly? A quick check shows no A record for your domain.

I've worked with Go-Daddy, my domain host, for quite a few days on this. They swear all is in order...

I'm by no means an expert, but I point DNS for clients in Go Daddy on a regular basis. Feel free to PM me a screen shot of your DNS settings and I might be able to help.

It's odd that no A record shows...even if it wasn't pointing to the correct site, it should at least show up in a DNS check.

OK. Now have most of the site back up with WIX> They have been really good to work with--very simple and professional.

Your link works fine for me. Clicked on a bunch of page links at random - all good. By the way, the home page says "copyright 2023" on the bottom.
